The minimum wage is the lowest amount an employer can legally pay their employees. This applies to everyone working in Australia, including international students working part-time or casually to earn money while studying.
As of 1 July 2024, the National Minimum Wage has risen, according to the Australian Government’s Fair Work Commission. Here are the details:
- The National Minimum Wage will increase by 3.75%, from $23.23 per hour to $24.10 per hour (before tax). For full-time workers, the weekly minimum wage has gone up from $882.80 to $915.90.
- Most employees are covered by an award, a legal document specifying the pay for a worker in a particular industry or occupation. Minimum Award Wages will also rise by 3.75% as of 1 July 2024.
As an international student, you are protected by Australia’s workplace laws. If you are being paid less than the minimum wage, you should speak with your employer. If the issue persists, contact the Fair Work Ombudsman.
