Contributory Aged Parent visa
Contributory Aged Parent visa enables an elderly parent of an Australian citizen, holder of a permanent visa or an eligible New Zealand citizen to temporarily join the family in Australia. Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 884) is the first stage of a two stage visa application which can lead to a permanent visa if the applicant applies for Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864) within two years of this visa grant. This visa has a higher application fee and is an option for aged parents who wish to avoid the long waiting processing time of up to 30 years in a traditional Aged Parent visa (subclass 804).
Who is eligible:
- Reached the age where you are eligible for an age pension in Australia. The pension age has been gradually increased from 65 (for men and women born before 1949) to 67 for those born after 1 July 1952.
- Has one or more children living in Australia who are Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens.
- At least half of your children are living permanently in Australia.
- A family sponsorship to apply for the Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 884).
Sponsorship can come from any of the following persons:
- Your child.
- Your child’s partner.
- The guardian or family member of your child.
- The guardian or family member of your child’s partner.
- A community organization.
What you can do with this visa:
- Live in Australia up to two years.
- Travel in and out of Australia for two years.
- Work or study in Australia (will not be subsidized by the government)
- Eligible for Medicare (the healthcare system subsidized by the Australian government.
- Apply for a permanent Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864).
Obligations of sponsor:
- Your sponsor must provide a letter of undertaking to all adequate support in terms of accommodation, finance and all relevant moral support for the two years of your stay in Australia.
- These obligations must cover all financial support for you and any accompanying family members.

Contributory Aged Parent Visa (subclass 864) (Permanent)
The Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864) is the second stage of the Contributory Aged Parent visa which allows the holder to remain permanently in Australia with the family. This is a permanent residence visa which comes after you have already held the temporary Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 884).
What you can do with the Visa:
- Reside in Australia permanently
- Travel in and out of Australia for five years
- Work or study in Australia
- Eligible for Medicare (the healthcare system subsidized by the Australian government)
- Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
- Apply for citizenship when eligible
Obligations of sponsor:
- Your sponsor must provide all adequate support in terms of accommodation, finance and all relevant moral support for the first two years of your stay in Australia.
- These obligations must cover all financial support for you and any accompanying family members.
- An Assurance of Support (AoS) must be placed with the government for you and your dependents for ten years.
