Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)
The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) assessment is carried out by the education provider and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) to determine whether an individual’s circumstances sufficiently support the intention to travel to and remain in Australia on a temporary basis to achieve a successful educational outcome.
In order for you to apply for a Student Visa, education providers in Australia conduct their own GTE assessment to ensure only genuine applicants are given a Letter of Offer to study. Information regarding GTE requirements is available on the DIBP website.
To make a GTE assessment, education providers usually assess an application with all supporting documents provided by the applicant against the entry requirement for the course applied for namely:
- Evidence of English language proficiency,
- Previous academic record,
- Employment/professional experience,
The number of gap years where a student has worked before deciding to continue the study in Australia should be provided with evidence that supports the current application. In many cases, mature applicants who make an application to study a course with a low tuition fee and maximum course duration will raise questions as to the genuineness of the intention to study in Australia. Applicants must demonstrate why they have chosen to study in Australia, in the particular course at a particular institution. In most cases, the applicants must show financial evidence to pay for their tuition fees, one-year living expenses, insurance coverage for the entire study duration and travelling expenses to return to their home country after their studies.
The decision on whether to approve a student visa lies entirely with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
